First of all,there's no such thing as an "assault" rifle and full auto rifles are illegal for Americans to own. Semi-autos can't be banned because they're used in different variations for hunting as it's most popular piece of gear. Blanket knee jerks are the worst for collateral,unintended,completely useless results. Secondly,you're blaming the firearm instead of the shooter. That's like blaming forks because you're fat or a a hammer because you smashed your thumb.

That's why there's such a vast difference in American and Canadian mind sets and attitudes when it comes to firearms and firearms ownership,simply because of the evolution of political systems starting with the origin of each country. Americans have "rights" carved in stone by the US Constitution. Canadians have "privileges" which can disappear with the stroke of The Governor-General's pen at the behest of the ruling political party's ideology and dogma.

US firearms laws and state specific, some have significantly heavier restrictions than others, the machine gun ban involves not being able to import guns made after a certain date, in the 80s somewhere.

OK,only if one has a federal firearms license, has jumped through more hoops with ATFE,the FBI and local Sheriff and has a legit reason for owning/possessing one. The average American hasn't a hope of owning a full-auto "just because".

They are not actually illegal in Canada either, just very heavily regulated but there are people who have them legally, not that everyone should be able to have them, at least not in my mind, not a free for all with no consideration of any outside information.
