Have never heard of one occasion where someone was charged much less warned for working their pointer out of season without the appropriate paper work.
Lets be clear its not illegal to work your dog in the field. Its only contrary to the rules not to have the appropriate paper work.
So if you respect the environment and no one complains no one will come to give you grief.
Its just not that big of a problem
Appropriate ? Is this another one of those open to interpretation ?
Wild birds have a nesting season ! I would have thought the ministry would restrict dog training during that season similar to western provinces and wated to abide by the rules and regulations, as uncommon as that may sound but since I didn't find any information pertaining to the subject on the regulations, I thought I would ask on this message board like an idiot but should have known better.
I vaugly remember reading somewhere that dogs must be on a leash or not allowed to run at large or something to that extent during closed season so i assume it's not legal to train dogs in the woods outside of hunting season in Ontario period. Not a very dog/ hunter friendly province !
Woodcock will abandon their nests if harassed during incubation period and they've had a tough time as is already this spring from unfavorable weather. To suggest, advise or even hint that its ok to run dogs during this nesting period is not only wrong but disturbing and unethical. Doing it and just keeping quiet about it or not being charged is not the right answere. The issue is all about respect for wildlife and it's not just the authorities responsibility to protect it but as custodians it's up to each and every single one of us.

I understand the confusion. It would be beneficial if the regulations CLEARLY stated the rules for dog training out of bird season.

Think the problem is we have been doing such a good job policing ourselves that black and white rules and enforcement haven't been needed.
Abuse the privilege and I'm sure it would be cracked down upon.
Time in the outdoors is never wasted

Added to this discussion is the concept of what kind of dog training are we doing??
If I were running foxhounds the only license required is a small game license.
Training retrievers , land or water requires no permit . In fact the licensed trial season is about to begin here in Ontario and no licenses are required to hold these events. They are recorded with the CKC but we no longer seek a 'license' to hold these events.
Where you will see restrictions to training/trialing is within various areas....Hullett Marsh for example where as the Friends of Hullett have described allowable training periods with dogs.
Don't think anyone was suggesting unethical/illegal approach to our pastime of dog training. I do agree people often provide too much information about activities which tend to put them under the microscope. As an example, years go we were conducting a licensed FT in a Provincial Park. Dead ducks and blank shells being used. A father and his son barged in informing us we couldn't possibly we shooting in a PP and wanted things ended. As much as we tried to explain and suggest he visit the Park Superintendent, he continued to harass us. We tried to provide the purpose and value but he would not have any of that. The
OPP removed him.
Sidelock, you raised a reasonable question(s) about dog training and timing here in Ontario. Nothing wrong with seeking clear and accurate information, however you came on with accusations aimed at some folks that responded. Always better to get good facts and share with the group but consider how we do things.
Regards...

What accusations ? I simply questioned a post the way I interpreted it which to me seemed clearly obvious.
