Default Permethrin for ticks and other bugs

Permethrin is the only thing that works 100% in my experience against ticks and other biting insects. It kills them on contact, and is non-toxic for humans. Since the Sawyer spray isn't available in Canada, I buy my permethrin concentrate from the states and dilute it myself. Thought I would share a link so others can avoid getting bit. Just dilute this stuff down 20:1 and you get a nice 0.5% spray to treat your clothes with. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I get the 36.5% permrethrin 32 oz bottle. Mix one ounce in a US gallon to get the right mixture. I also spray the inside of my boat down. It eliminates those ankle biting flys!!!!!!

I use the stuff you spray on horses, we use to use it all the time at the farm. Think its called Ultra Shield, you can get it at TSC.

I've been buying equestrian bug spray at TSC which contains it. I spray all my gear and cloths the night before. Never had a tick and the deer don't seem to notice the citronella smell.

I'd love to get the good stuff though.

I tried to order the good stuff at Amazon but shipping was over $100 for one bottle.

I just received my Amazon order of 2- 24 oz bottles of Sawyer SP 657 Premium Permethrin. 72 $ with shipping and import charges. Expensive but apparently quite effective.

Funny, the Government of Canada publication on Travel Health and Safety entitled “Insect bite prevention” recommends applying permethrin on clothes as an effective preventative against infected insect bites like ticks that carry Lyme and other diseases, but strangely permetherin is not allowed in Canada: https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/heal...ty/insect-bite

I guess they want Lyme disease to spread by not allowing sprays like Sawyers to enter the country- makes no sense...

I tried the citronella scented horse spray and my hats off to you guys that can stand that awful smell throughout your hunt - it is really STRONG SMELLING and does not wash off easily. I applied some to my hunting clothes and it took 5 washes to get the smell off. I doubt any deer would get anywhere near this.

Also be careful about the stuff recommended by the OP - it has strong petroleum distillates in it and also has a strong smell - like diesel fuel.

Sawyers spray is the best for hunting (and our noses LOL) as it is unscented. REI used to ship to Canada but has stopped doing so.

If you guys know a Canadian source, let us know

I did find the citronella smell a bit strong so I spray my cloths a day or two ahead and let them dry.

I've had does come within 5 yards of me so I know they don't mind the smell.

To be honest, all my deer gear has started to have a gentle smell of fake deer urine. That buck bomb spray gets on EVERYTHING! I tried it this year and had a young buck follow my foot prints in the snow right up to 10 yards from my. Too bad he was too small.

Ahuntr300, Permethrin is allowed and sold in Canada, the guys spraying houses for spiders are using it and there are several commercial and agricultural uses as well including on livestock. The problem lies with Ontario's rules of chemical sales, the government of Canada may recommend it but it's our Ontario government that won't allow it's unlicensed sale.
