Duck Tollers

Any hunters here use a Nova Scotia Duck Toller? What’s your experience been like?

Don't own one but I hunt with one regularly that my buddy has. Beautiful dog and great temperament. Leaves a lot to be desired as a duck dog though.

Awesome duck dogs. Don't take up much room in the blind or boat.

Very intelligent, so training must be methodical, not repetitive like when training a lab.

And the toller scream only happens if you let your dog do it. Mine doesn't.

With respect to exercise, you have to exercise them physically and mentally. Hide and go seek with a treat or one of their toys is an example of exercising their mind.

Find a breeder that has accomplished hunting dogs in their lines. Sue Kish breeds tollers and competes with them in hunt tests. She might be a good place to start.

This is where I’m getting mine from this fall.

Have seen a couple of the best, one was a great Master Hunter and had done really well in the USA. I judged another from Sue K's kennel that won a qualifying and I believe was the only QAA in the country-nice little dog.

Have seen quite a few that will not satisfy a hard hunter but that doesn't mean that they aren't out there.

When checking pedigrees look for some working titles....not show titles and request to see the parents work. Do not be satisfied with a dog doing a 20ft retrieve, you want to see some distance and work in cover. Look for keen eyes and performance showing you a dog that wants to do the work.

Probably a Master Hunter is best you can find for field work but a fair bit better than getting a pup from a Best in Show.
