I have a 7 month old DD pup. He's been a ton of fun but its my first go at a versatile dog so I'm taking all the help I can get!

Will be working with a pro on introducing the gun and have done quite a bit of preliminary work already. Won't be shooting anything over him if he's not ready.

If your pup has been properly introduced to the gun there is no reason not to kill birds over him. At 7 months you should still be building the desire in him that will help him get through the breaking process. If your pup scents and puts up a bird, kill it for him and let him chase it down and get his mouth on it.

At this age he only needs to go with you (not run off) and come to you when called. There should be no rules around wild birds. This is when you are teaching him how to hunt. If you start jacking with him around birds he will start thinking about you and not giving his full attention to the birds. This is where your pup will learn where to look for birds and how they behave, which is the purpose of a wild bird camp. You want your pup to be able to efficiently hunt whatever species you are after before you start with the rules. You and your dog will be much more successul if you do that.
