I hunt alone but always keep my wife updated with my whereabouts. When I'm about to come down the tree I message her, then do the same at the bottom and again at the car.
Of course if your hunting away from cell signal then that adds another issue entirely. I've considered getting a SPOT or similar device but hunting with a partner is a safer bet.
Sadly I doubt this gentleman will recover from his injuries at his age. :-(

Some years back there was a story on OOD about a guy near London who took a fall from a tree stand & broke his pelvis, spent an unplanned night in the woods. About 1 km from home ... he didn't bring his cell phone.

Na - just staying away from that off topic site - too much BS and dummies there - I'm still interested in the fishing and hunting - I bet they miss me because there ain't anyone there to set things the record straight anymore - been busy fishing and working on my boat

A co-worker hung by his harness for 11 hours before he was found and ended up crippled for life. He lost one leg at the hip and the other from the knee down. He,too, was lucky to be alive, but, his quality of life was horrendous. He finally succumbed to complications after seven years in a wheel chair. I vowed then and there to never use a tree stand.
Oh,yeah,welcome back JoePa.
If a tree falls on your ex in the woods and nobody hears it,you should probably still get rid of your chainsaw. Just sayin'....
