Snowshoe hare

I know everyone is excited for the deer hunt right now but has anyone been out chasing snowshoes. I went out today with another forum member in hopes of some upland game and maybe a flush or two of the white cedar ghost also known as the snowshoe hare. We tried hitting the thick stuff kicking a couple of bushes. We ended up flushing two hare with no shots taken and 0 grouse and 0 woodcock flushes. All and all it was a nice day, has anyone been out yet chasing snowshoes

Funny you bring this up. I just got one on Saturday while grouse hunting. Just starting to change color.

Nice hare congrats. One I saw was that colouration but the other one I flushed was more on the way of losing the brown.

Don't get discouraged, habitat is key to locating them. I cant count how many times I've been skunked and how many times I've wondered if there are any hare where im hunting. When you do flush one you will start to recognize were they like to hang around or under. Im not hunting with a dog so you have to kick as much bushes as possible. Hunting with another person will put your odds of seeing more hare. Work together and push as much bush as possible and watch for them trying to escape where the other person is pushing. Good Luck

Glad someone brought up the subject before I did!
They are truly the ghosts of the forest as mentioned by OP.
I find them in swampy areas, but they are more rare than grouse!!!
Normally during the "January thaw" they are easier to spot due to their contrasting colour when sitting against the muddy,
brown/grey background.

Im curious about colour as it is early now and lots of snow. We have a mix of cottontail and hares where i am so im excited to get out.
