Default What is your strategy now?

    Folks,
What will your strategy be for the coming weeks, before the start of the 2 nd rut? Now that a lot of crops are off the ground and food sources change.

Me for the next couple of weeks, I don't think I will change anything, do the odd bleat here and there, few young grunts, will put the rattle bag away .

I know there is all kinds of scientific info as to when the rut is supposed to begin, but, a deer has a heart beat, a brain, and does are woman, so they have moods too, but I found this past week saw some
weird behaviours, late in the week, Saturday still saw does running and I mean running from bucs, still saw scraps being visited. \
Also had a nice size 8 pt come out, I grunted softly, stopped him, softly grunted again and he turned and walked back the way he came????

So what will your strategy be?

More still hunting travel corridors and the edges of food plots.

Don't think I'll change nothing, by the looks of the snow I'd dress warmer. Gang brought 6 bucks in during rifle hunt and none of them had a doe with them except for the one I saw on Thursday. Ended up taking the doe as it was worth half the money pot back at camp. But she didn't look to interested in him either. Lots of corn and beans still on in my area.

In my area the rut just finally kicked in watched big body 6 chase doe around for 10 min yesterday morning in soybean field after he was done I rattled him at 300yard he came all the way in to 30yards broadside but I let him pass I got my bowtech sighted on something else that’s bigger but 6pointer he came in to fight the next week and half has always been prime time rut activity in my area

switch back to morning and evening hunts, lighter on the calls, start hunting over bait less over scrapes.

Hunted WMU 60 for 2 days. Too much snow and very cold, but I sat in a treestand ALL Saturday plus Sunday morning. No deer seen, but guys next door had three hanging. My friend had a good sized buck come out Sunday morning, but he had no shot...
We will continue to bait and hunt that area. No changes. We will also bait closer to home for the December controlled hunt.
Snow on the ground reveals their travel patterns, so if I change anything, I will set up an ambush point along those trails.

As an aside, hockeymjt, do you hunt close to home? We had a cottage south of Tobermory for many years (Cape Chin North area) but we never saw any deer up there. Just bears and rattlesnakes!

Going to try and get out for my first hunt still!!! Was not able to before the first controlled hunt due to work and family, But I am planning on hunting a few days in a row in the next week or so.Going to still hunt and a bit of walk and stalk....hopefully I have learned enough from the past years hunting this farm to actually connect this year. Good Luck to all

Talking to my neighbor, friend, rut is just starting in our area. Farmer called me on the weekend to say he started cutting the corn. Planning on hunting this Thursday to Sunday. Will sit quietly in my tree stand overlooking field. If I don’t get anything, I will hunt the last 4 days of muzzle loader season. Nice to see a few guys get their first. Congrats and good luck to all.
