Deer, Corn and Combines
I had a lengthy conversation yesterday with a fellow that does a lot of custom combining.
What he had to say was enough to get any one really pizzed off.
He has so far come across 7 dead deer and some remains of in corn fields that he is combining, 5 of those had broken legs he determined was caused by buck shot as he found evidence of buck shot wounds in the guts.
It really upsets him as he has to be very careful/watchful that he does not get them into the combine as it makes one big mess and down time involved, and costly repairs.
He also found a big 8 point buck tangled in a fence that it tried to jump but couldn,t due to a broken leg, it just struggled and died there from it,s wounds/broken leg, bleeding and starvation.
He claimed that as far as he could determine by what he saw , all these deer had been shot at with buck shot, he says he sees this every year after the controlled deer hunts .
This is very unfortunate as 7 unrecovered deer equals a possible seven others shot to make up for those , and there those are wondering why there is a lack of deer.
He said he expects to find more after this weeks hunt as there is a lot of corn still standing to be combined.

I will never use buckshot and I advise those I hunt with to use slugs as well for stories like this that I seem to hear all to often. That's sad.

These deer are getting wounded by guys dogging deer and trying to pump this running animal moving at full speed with buck shot and hoping to drop it. its like shooting one with a pellet gun. Its such an unethical and bs bullet/caliber however you want to call it. Really frustrates me hearing this. I hate knowing a poor animal is suffering. Granted, it may not be 100% this type of hunter but I've seen this before first hand and am just not a fan.

One reason I'm glad we can only use muzzleloaders in 92B. Buck-shot & shotguns are illegal for deer hunting in 92B!

It's always the shot and the gun, never the piss poor guy aiming the damn thing.

Absolutely, I've commented before that buckshot should be banned. But there are guys that will argue, in favour of ssgs. Why, I don't know.

They argue that ssg's are great cuz once they shot a deer at 100 yards and 1 lucky pellet got it in the head. very surprised they haven't been banned yet!!!!!!!!

Seems to be a local problem.. If that was the case all the farmers in southern Ontario would be finding the same thing.
Probably the same people thinking they know what they are doing. How far does your farmer go a few concessions. ? He is not going to be traveling 100 farms in 3 different counties.

They are not meant to be used at that distance .. That's more than double what they are recommended for.

His custom combing business takes him into three counties, it is definitely not just a local problem!
