Back Badges Anyone?
In my youth, small game hunters had to wear a back badge that came with their small game licence. I forget when they did away with it.
Perhaps I'm feeling a bit nostalgic, but I wouldn’t mind if they brought
these back. It may deter some from poaching if their ID number was on their back for others to see. Thoughts?

I had to use one when I was deer hunting in New York. I don't see the big deal using one but its another thing to lose while hunting

Wow your going back a ways. Late 70’s.? Actually not a bad idea for easy identification. I wouldn’t have a problem with it. Not sure the poachers would wear them?

Remember them well. 1967 or '68 is when they first came out and if you recall, the first ones that were issued were white. That's when the controversy about them started. Deer hunters complained about the white color figuring they looked like a deer's tail. Then they were re-issued in orange and the complaints still poured in. I remember one letter from a guy who claimed his snagged up on a branch while crossing a beaver dam and he ended up in the drink. The biggest complaint was patches missing off their jacket when they got home.
Back then I issued licences so I grabbed up no. 10000 in white and 10001 for my wife. Then when the orange came out I grabbed up the same numbers again. Still have them somewhere in a drawer along with other OFB and L&F memorabilia.

I think they are a waste of time. If you run into an officer you have to show them your licence anyway so why double up. It just adds more expense and something more to worry about. What happens if you catch it on some brush and don't realize it and it falls off unknowingly? Now you have a ticket for a stupid reason.

The original idea was that landowners could read off the licence number of any trespasser then that number could be passed along to enforcement personnel. Obviously this was a southern Ontario brainwave.

I remember the patches, some of the sporting goods manufacturers even got into the act and provided clear patch holders on the back of their hunting vests. But my father-in-law passed unto me one better, a keep sake from his father. It was a deer licence on a pin-on-button, the annual date on it escapes me, but I believe I still have it around somewhere. Imagine having something like that to pin to your hat or your hunting jacket.

I kept the last one of mine from the 1981/82 season, the last season they were issued as a keepsake. A-h-h-h,the good ol' days.

My dad still has his, pouch, pin and permit. I would not want this to come back. Mainly because its redundant as the officer still needs to make contact with you to make sure its legit and i don't want to poke holes and maybe even tare my hunting jackets while bush waking. it is cool to look at all the old permits and regulations he saved over the last 50yrs.

Been there done that the whole time it was out. Wouldn't want to go back for all the reason mentioned above. I didn't even keep any didn't want to remember them, but I guess that thought is gone.
