Try hunting rivers. My go to spot is much better once the snow comes.

I second the river hunts, can be awesome hunting once the ponds freeze.

When the weather turns cold I have the same problem with the canoe. Not worth the risk of death for a few ducks, I have a few go to spots these days, but if you can't find somewhere to hunt I'd suggest scouting for one you can walk to. There's thousands of Acres of public land in this province and if you are keen and have the time you can find some really awesome spots.

yeah dont get on the water in this with a canoe. i find the water that is running that hasn't frozen can be unpredictable at best. i heard last year or the year before a young man drowned on the nith during the late goose season hunt. he knew the land and river well and it still took him. the river can be unforgiving.
hunt safe and if needed, there's always next year. heck, to keep you out of danger i'd even offer you to come out here to hunt the early season next year :P

i'm not above taking an offer to hunt. birds seem like more of a social activity than deer anyway. i'm still gonna have all next summer to scout and fish but with everything getting frozen it's gonna feel like forever

if pond is shallow enough go with others, break a hole , they do like open water. I just wish I had this week off, I do love to field hunt in the snow.
