So I got separated years ago and my ex recently found a license renewal. Expired back in 2012. It was fee waived and such. I sent a email to the RCMP with the file number and firearms license number. Waiting to here back and hopefully I don't have to retake course.

Depending how recently your POL expired you maybe able to renew it, without having to do a Firearm Course and the exam. There is suppose to be a 6 month hold over period for PAL renewal, which means your firearms are cover for up to six months as you wait for your new PAL, however you may not purchase firearms or ammunition until you get the updated licence. Those who are renewing a their POL were suppose to now be issued a PAL. The catch 22 is weather you might have over shot the deadline by not starting the POL renewal before the expiry date. I would have thought they should have sent you a reminder. In the past I usually receive a reminder 3 months before the renewal date, but knowing their processing speed like Greatwhite I apply six months before the expiry date. I generally end up getting my update PAL a couple of days ahead of receiving their reminder notice.
If your POL has just recently expired say with in a month they may yet act on the renewal and provide you with a PAL. If not your are most likely looking at a Firearm course and exam in order to get your PAL.
