I could do it with a 22 rimfire. The intent was to lighten this thread up, as I'm sure you got Mike

Many moons ago the instructor in my hunting course said something that stuck with me forever. Most hunters go through 5 stages in their life:
    Shooting Stage
    Limiting-Out Stage
    Trophy Stage
    Method Stage
    Sportsman Stage

Seems the OP is in between number 1 and 2. As I think most of us were wearing the same shoes at some point-Difference between myself and him was that compound crossbows shooting 460 fps didn't exist in my youth/early days.

    There’s one more stage....Don’t give a crap if I kill something...stage.
After over 50 yrs of hunting, that’s where I am.
Now it’s about family and friends enjoying the outdoors !!

I disagree with your theory about the odds of deer licking the same branch. Multiple deer intentionally lick the same branches on the same tree over and over again. During the rut bucks and does lick the branches above the scrape over and over again. Its one of their ways to broadcast who was there.

I listened to a Ted Nugent podcast about that very thing. He was on a rant about the Michigan DNR advocating a total baiting ban. The Whackmaster says “ deer swap spit all the time”,
    and he’s right !!!

    Hmm

I have been hunting for 30plus years. I'm still on the limting out stage.

I hunt to sustain my meat supply. Store bought meat is not in my diet and I intend on keeping it that way!
