Not sure - is there an easy way to tell?
    Easy peasy.
Just look at the muzzle end of the bore in good light. Does it look like there are a dozen rifling grooves? That's microgroove.
If it looks like 4 or 5 grooves, that's Ballard.

I've never owned a .45-70, but did own an older .444 that was likely MOA capable. I shot 1.5 MOA groups easily with a 2.5X scope.
Wish I still had that rifle, but the present owner wants to keep it, I think.

Thanks KC, I’ll take a look in the morning. Pretty sure it’s Ballard though.

Likely ballard rifling. My JM 1895 in 450 marlin was not a microgroove.

It has open sights on it now. My daughter got her license and will be using it this fall.
It is a very nice rifle.

45/70 Gov sure puts a smack down on 325 lb. Blackies. Just sayin'...........
If a tree falls on your ex in the woods and nobody hears it,you should probably still get rid of your chainsaw. Just sayin'....

Any of you big bore guys shot 40-72 WCF ? I think it was a Winchester 1895 lever that was chambered for them.

Haven't shot one, but yes, the .40-72 (and .38-72_ were 1895 Winchester chambering.
    The .40-82 was a Model 1886 and Model 1885 chambering. An 1886 or Marlin 1895 in .40-82 is my most-wanted bucket-list rifle.

I wound up getting some 40-60 rounds on Switzers last auction. They had them listed as 45-70 but obviously made a mistake.
    Weird looking round
