Video: Buck Sheds an Antler (Checks it Out Hours Later) - Ottawa, January 8
Hello All,
What a cool video cam capture from yesterday! The footage begins seconds after a buck sheds his left antler, showing him shaking his head back and forth, unaccustomed to the lopsided weight (and possibly trying to drop the other side.)
Four hours later he returns and proceeds to lick the base of his own antler. Who knew?!

Justin

He really did seem quite uncomfortable when it was first dropped. Haven't ever seen one come back to chew on a cast antler either.
Neat video!

How is it one careless cigarette can cause a forest fire, but it takes a whole box of matches to light a campfire?

Funny. When I pulled the antler from the snow, and before checking the cam footage, I was amazed how clean the base was for a fresh drop (I was just here a day and a half earlier so knew it had only just shed). Completely clean base without a drop of blood. Now I know the reason why, lol!

If I had to guess, more than 50% of my sheds I find in January - many finds happening around the second week. I have about 8 bucks on my cams right now - half of them have dropped their antlers already. The bigger bucks seem to be still holding still.
