I was in highschool and worked at a gas station at the time. If anyone here has driven through Burks Falls they would know it was the only station in town at the time. In fact, we were the only station between Huntsville and North Bay that had gas/was able to pump because we had a genny to power things. Cars lined up for a KM either way to get in. We ran out of gas that first night as panic was setting in. We got filled up overnight and sold out completely again the next day.

Ive never experienced anything else like that. Given im young (mid 30s). Curious if Ill experience that again?

I guess the closest was the ice storm in I think 2012 that hit the GTA? My in laws in Ajax were out of power for several days and the temps plummeted. I drove down Christmas eve to deliver a generator to them and stop their house from freezing up. It was utterly eerie driving down Lake Ridge road at 11PM towards Durham region and seeing total darkness where it should have been a bustling metropolis.

The biggest reason we were lucky in that outage is that it wasn’t winter. Not many wood stoves in the subdivisions. Just about every house these days has a gas furnace which doesn’t work without electricity, and generators are not so common in the city. Think of the mayhem had that happened in January !

And for that reason, people tend to avoid the apparent stigma of being labelled such by hiding the fact they might have a few extra supplies on hand just in case of emergency. No one dares refer to themselves as a "prepper".
Our society is so dependent on others for their well being. They to turn on the tap and expect water to pour out. Hit the light switch and lights to come on. Go to the store and have food available and the debit machine to work. It goes on and on and includes almost every facet of our daily lives. Yet when gov't officials themselves, advise people to be prepared for a week or two of possible lock-down, it's treated with a puzzled look and steadfast denial of having to get "prepared". ie "prepper"
If things get serious, and I hope it doesn't, I won't be eating granola sandwiches, it'll be roast beef n mashed taters because it could be said that I'm a prepper. LOL
I don’t consider “prepper” to be a derogatory term unless used in a derogatory context. One of the active members here described himself as such not all that long ago and I certainly didn’t think anything of it.

Nothing wrong with being ready. We have a downstairs pantry that allows us to keep extra food on hand and more importantly to stock up when stuff is on sale, guess we are wanna-be preppers too.

Looks like Montreal has its first confirmed case. Coming to a place near you. Officials said the woman visited a clinic with minor symptoms. The tests for coronavirus were conducted the day after her return to Canada, with positive results coming back Thursday.

This might help to put the Coronavirus into perspective.

If anyone saw the report this past week from the Ontario EMO office on why they sent that false alert about Pickering a few weeks ago, and you still think the Government have any level of professionalism or planning or preparations to handle any level of emergency, let alone a pandemic, you really need to stop drinking/smoking whatever it is you’re into!!!

I’m not actually worried about the virus. I’m worried about the side effects on society. Food shortages. Power outages. Transportation lockdowns. Fuel shortages. People being stupid.

That’s the stuff that worries me. The warranted and unwarranted reaction by people and the government.

More cases in Ontario including york region. It doesn't take long for the spread as you can see what happened in Italy in just a matter of days.
