I have an even better OOPS!
Last year, crept In quietly into the bush before daylight, got near the roost and set up.
When legal shooting time came, cycled my pump open so slowly so as not to alert birds, slid a shell into the chamber, cycled it closed again ever so slowly to be quiet, and slid 2 more into magazine.
When 2 gobblers finally walked into range I squeezed the trigger, only to have nothing happen!
Had done the cycling so slowly the trigger mechanism hadn’t cocked!!
to make matters even worse, I slowly pumped it again twice more, and still no shot!!!

Well the theory was sound! Next time it'll work out. Good read in any case!

I have missed as well....tight choke and bird too close.
I have always aimed where the ugly meets the feathers....put a scope on years ago. That solved the miss problem....today, a big jake got a pass !!

What scope are you using, seriously thinking of putting one on.....

Go with a Red Dot or Relfex...they have zero magnification and no parallax. Makes for quick target acquisition and accurate at 20 -30 yds.

Did the fibre optic sights change your POI to hitting high? Could always just go back to a bead. With my old Winchester shotgun my POI was low with the bead, but fibre optic sights (non adjustable) brought it up. When I went to an 870 years ago I just stuck with the bead and it's served me well enough, but I would probably consider a scope for a dedicated turkey rig. A bit of magnification would be nice for confirming the beard in low light too. They're hard to see on jakes if things happen quickly.!

I have a 3-9 bushnell, only because I had it and the camo is the same as my gun. A 1.5-3 power would be ideal...I have a saddle mount on my 870.

Ya, I have been searching the net for a 1x4 shotgun scope with circle X reticle, ... Figure it would be good.... Turkeys head in the circle down he goes but it looks like Bushnell stopped making them and no-one I can find has any stock....

Yes, it's non adjustable and hits high..... easy to remember at the range, not so much when you are actually on an animal (in the hunt)....

Bought four last time I found them. Put them on my rifle as well for dogging deer as well.

I missed a close bird as well 2 years ago. Same thing, both me and the bird just paused for a second stunned by what had just not happened. It happened less than a half hour after legal light on opener… I had the whole rest of the day to sit and think about it while no more males came in.
