Default Afternoon Delight : 16ga success

One of those quick hunts…I went out for my first hunt this aft at about 2:00. I usually sit for 30-45 minutes after getting settled into the pop-up before I make my first call, so I open the Kindle. I read for about 10 minutes, look up and there’s a Hen about 30 yds out.

Nice, no calling required and a live hen instead of a decoy.

As I’m keeping an eye on her, 3 Tom’s come into the area, none of them are strutting or gobbling. So I have viable targets and it’s only been about 15 minutes since I sat down.

One Tom stops about 15 yds in front of me ..looks directly at the pop-up and puts his head and neck up in a full stretch. It was like suicide. My Mossburg 190 KA, 16 ga. bolt action loaded with #4 shot hits perfect and down he goes.

Pack up, pick up the bird and head for home. When I walk in the wife asks if I forgot something, “No” I said “I have to clean the turkey” …she says “you’ve only been gone ˝ hr. !! “

Took about 30 minutes to debone, bag it and put in to the freezer. A quick clean up and sitting on the couch with a coffee a little after 3:00. Military precision HaHa..

I think I’ll buy a 2nd tag this year. Get up and do a morning hunt on the other side of the property where I can hear some Gobbling while I’m walking with the dog in the morning. Take the ML and have a Black Powder hunt. I do like a ‘Smoke and Feathers’ hunt.

This was the first time I've seen a Turkey die like this...laying flat on his back.

Congrats Mike! Yes, after a quick hunt like that, a second tag is in order!

How is it one careless cigarette can cause a forest fire, but it takes a whole box of matches to light a campfire?

Thanks guy's....it's not always that fast, I've had some great hunts in there that have taken a few days before the Tom co-operates. They hang out in there midday, they rarely gobble, but do respond to box purrs.

I used to hunt on the other side of the property when I first started. Always morning hunts and some were fast there too. Nice when they come off the roost and land right in front of you.

Thinking on it last night, I'm definitely going to pick up the 2nd tag, since I'm not spending the money having breakfast out with my buddy, I have a little extra in my allowance.

Excellent! My opening day was rather boring compared to yours. I'll get out again mid month!
