Dipsy Diver

Hey folks. Hope you’re all having a safe and enjoyable summer. Crazy times.
I just bought a dipsy diver. The instruction read “use 20lb test.” For both line and the tail line from the diver.
My thoughts are why would I need to use such heavy line to my lure. Its not really taking any pressure other than the fish on. Which I would usually use 8 lb floro. Is the heavy line needed to the lure? Thanks.

The 20 lb line is the main line to the dipsey ... after that go wild.
However, note that most run 30 lb test (either multi-strand wire line or braid) to the dipsey and then 20lb or 30lb fluoro after the dipsey.
If you want a lighter line to get some kind of action on the spoon .... use a longer lead, probably 15 to 20ft or so of 12 lb ... but you may have to hand line.

I’m running 50lb main line braid. 20lb fluro to lure. Allows you to use for salmon if you wish. I wanted the 20lb fluro for the Erie rainbows. Some hit pretty hard. I also run a snubber too. Shock absorbing for the trout. And length to the dipsy is about 2 arm lengths.

The 20lb test is just for the diver chart. You can run whatever line you want. That info is just for the depth curve based on the thickness of the line as it affects how deep your dipsy will dive. Braid works great but wire line even better you dont need as much line out and less fleas. Got to get some wire setups, use them all the time on my buddies boat they catch fish.
