    Default Best GPS Collar

In the market for a new GPS dog collar and would like opinions on which is the most user friendly. Not interested in the legal for use in Canada debates so let’s not get into that. Thanks

We all use Garmin 320s and dc40 n dc50 collars. I like it because its NOT touch screen.

Another group I hunt with uses Garmin alpha 100 with TT collars. It's nice because you can track other units to keep track of your buddies. Has tone and vibrate features to correct the dog. This is a touch screen model, I don't like it because in the bush it gets wet, your hands are wet, touch screen doesnt work as good.

This is just what I've used, cant say they are the best but every hound guy I know uses Garmin's

Its hard to compare manufacturers, when your at a beagle field trial with over a hundred entries and every single hound is wearing a garmin collar. I like the alpha unit with mini collars. The alpha has additional functions. I like the training options and the ability to track other hand held units and collars. I agree with songdog, the touch screen takes more care is use than the easier to operate buttons. The "old" radio tracking units still have an advantage of long collar battery life and range. Those factors don't come into play much for hare hunting.

This has got me thinking, how did Garmin come dominate this market so much. It seems like companies like Johnson, Wildlife and Tracker had experience in tracking and little in gps technology, where as Garmin brought all their gps expertise to tracking units.

I also use an Astro 320 with DC40 collar. Does everything it needs to well. If the Alpha existed when I bought it I would likely have gone that way to reduce the stuff in my smallish Setter’s neck. There is a new very simple one I think it’s the 550?? I don’t use any if the other features on mine so basic is all I need.
I’m suspicious of people who don't like dogs, but I trust a dog who doesn't like a person.

Garmin has had the technology for a long time before they introduced it to the public. Tracking birds, and wildlife. As soon as they were available I had one, the Astro 220 with DC30 collars. Still have it and use it. The only thing I've done is upgrade the collars to the extended range antennas...

And I still have 2 blue box 1000's and collars if anyone is looking for a wildlife unit...

I have a wildlife, telemetry box and multiple collars, have a Astro 320 and an Alpha 100, with T5 and t15 collars. I don't like the touch screen on the Alpha, we pay that much money and it will get scratched , damaged etc. My Astro is like new with the toggle features and a screen protector . You won't believe the training aspect of the Alpha in combination with the collars. My friend never even takes leads with him and will release more than 6 hounds at a time. At field trials now, most all the hounds are trained to come home with the vibration of the collar. Hounds are not often trained in obedience, man do they work. To my knowledge the Sport dog system also works as well, Garmin has just dominated the game here in Canada.
Garmin did everyone in Canada a favour by producing the 900. Industry Canada just would not budge on the MURS frequency issue. Don't know anyone yet that has one.
