    Default Marten river

Hey guys, I’m at a cottage rental on marten river this week and I’m trying to sort out the fishing early. How is the fishing in marten river/lake? Is it worth plying the waters for the week or should we be jumping to smaller side lakes? Primarily looking for walleye, pike as a second. Any info would help immensely.

Well, as an update, this lake is kicking our butts. We have been fishing pretty hard so far this week with not much to show for it. Some bass and two 12” walleye. We have tried all the usual tactics, trolling cranks and bottom bouncers/worm harnesses, jig and a minnow, etc on structure breaks but they definitely aren’t jumping in the boat. I’ll post up at the end of the week and let you know if anything changes.

Never fished there, but did just get back from a northern trip. I found the walleye were all in shallower spots, like as in spring patterns. All the deep holes didn't produce like the 6-10' flats. Maybe try drifting a full worm on a jig head over some weed flats. Can't lose for trying. Good luck..

That’s a good thought. We have been fishing deeper, like summer patterns, but I’ll try changing it up. The water temps are super low already. Makes me wonder if the lake flipped.

We used to stay at Marten River Lodge for a week combining the Moose hunt with a fishing week. We never took any Moose, but, the Walleye fishing was awesome mostly with crankbaits.

Well the plot thickens. We did a little more exploring this afternoon and made it out to the main basin of the lake. We found fish absolutely stacked in 50-80 fow at 30-50’ down based around some deep humps and islands (Thank you Navionics). There were lots of bait balls as well. As we were there 4 other local boats came out and set up in the area. Unfortunately we couldn’t get any to take on a jig and minnow, plastic swim baits or jigging rap. Now we just need to figure out what they want to eat. I’m kicking myself for not bringing the riggers/dipseys up now!
