Temagami Grouse

I have hunted up there for grouse and woodcock. My advice is to try and beat the moose hunters. I have hunted before and after the rifle hunt and seems to be more birds before the moose guys show up. The place I stayed provided me a map with some information to point me in the right direction. Endless atv/logging roads. If you have a decent dog you will certainly find birds. Thanks for all the info folks. Here's to my last year hunting birds without a dog. My Weim pup should be ready for the big woods next year!

I'm up there now.
Been doing lots of ATV riding but not hunting.
Seen a more than a few grouse.
They are not too bothered by us.
Moose hunters shouldn't be a problem as there is very few tags for the area this year.

I think this year and next will be good for grouse. Although more people have headed to the outdoors for "easy" activities like hiking and fishing... getting a hunting license isn't something people have done just on a whim becasue they are bored (fishing was soooo crowded with newbies this year!).

So you aren't going to see a bunch of newbies out for grouse. Mix that in with the number of cancelled trips (our group of 8 cancelled our trip last week and we generally take 30+ birds each...) and also the lack of americans...

The end result should be phenomenal hunting for smaller groups and day-trips this year combined with higher populations next year IMHO

I have hunted Temagami area before and seen many hunters personally. My GSP needs to go out more but I may not go that far this year, since I just came back from a really FAR trip to Savant Lake! We were after moose early this year since we had a couple of tags for 16B.
In the meantime, we got a bunch of spruce grouse, with a couple of ruffies thrown in for good measure.
A lot of moose hunters were in the area also and I suspect they were all shooting grouse also.
Anyone going to Temagami, and considering a stay at their motel, should consider a short drive to the north and stay in Latchford instead.

I had this Stevens 555 20ga out this past weekend. I didn't connect with birds,but,this gun is sweet. It looks great, light to carry and swings well. I set up a pattern paper with full and mod chokes at 40 yds and got 70% of the #5 steel pellets inside the 30 in. circle with the full and 50% with the mod. The barrel selector works flawlessly. This gun doesn't have an ejector which is OK by me. I don't have to hunt up ejected hulls. For the money (under$900) I'm satisfied with that. I hope this helps.

Just left there this morning.
As I said this year there are only a few tags for that area for moose.
As for the motel has changed hands 3 times in the last 3 years. Newest change was a about a month ago.
