Why is it mainly older men in rural areas? ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE.

Rural people tend not to have benefits, they are generally not working in the city for big companies and there is less of a chance that they have benefits. The support by the current medical system for mental health is almost non-existent, if you need to talk to someone about your problems it cost you a ton of money, another thing that rural people tend not to have a lot of kicking around.

The reason why they use guns is because guns are what they have. If there were no guns they would jump off something or cut themselves, men unlike women, tend not to use pills but women rarely do something that will leave an ugly corpse, not sure why but this is the case.

The only fool's that will try for a civil war after the election will be the "domestic terrorists" being cheered on by the defeated Donald Trump.
The US Armed Forces will put down any armed insurrection with swift and decisive action.

Isn't that what Abraham Lincoln said in 1859?

It would be a battle they could not possibly win or `put down`as you say. It certainly would not be swift or decisive since the military wouldn't know who theyre fighting. Guerilla tactics come to mind and with hundreds of thousands of the civilians being ex-military themselves, its not hard to see the resulting mayhem. Do you really think all the retired S.E.A.L.s, Rangers and special forces personnel, amongst the millions of other folks, who believe in the right to own firearms, are just going to hand them over because of the likes of Biden or Harris telling them to. Not going to happen

Boy oh boy. Way off the topic. No politics on one thread was a nice idea, in theory.

It is unfortunate a thread about a legitimate social issue in Ontario which may affect or even has affected many us of veers off into moronic Red Dawn fantasies.

The problem is that certain people on here choose to write posts in a way that make it that there cannot be any other discussion. When the original post is not actually asking about middle age male suicides but the topic is "Gun Related Deaths" you are trolling for a political argument, there can be no conversation, although, you knew that.

No, some respondents posted along the lines of what I was seeking. BM's post was very insightful, something I had not thought of, many others were informative as well. I used that title because that was part the title, of the article that I read. " Why are older rural gentlemen killing themselves with guns, at a higher rate than any other demographic', was the question. There was no need for a political reply. Unless you believe politics to be the cause of it.

Politics may be only a small part of it. The root cause with aging people is depression as I'm sure you're well aware having worked in LTC. Mental health in all segments needs to bolstered with huge infusions of money and expertise. Treatment centers are a good start. The money is there. All we need is the political will to implement the plans.

Absolutely I saw many people with depression in my 32 years in LTC. A Dr. was always available to them, and there are meds that work wonders. As a senior myself, I have to wonder why anyone, would not want to be diagnosed and then treated for any problem, be it hip or head it makes no diff. If you are thinking of taking your own life , you need help. Either to do it 'ethically', or to prevent it.
