When the offender refuses to admit or cooperate with Leo, the case hangs solely on witness testimony. How willing do you think a witness would be to sit in court and rat out a friend for all to see?
That is where many cases hit a dead end, when witness will not put themselves in that place. Some people are wise enough to know when to step away and leave it be..

I will never find out if he regrets it or not, since I told him to take my phone number out of his phone book and never call me again.
He stuck me with over $400.00 that was his share of the grocery's and gas money that he would not pay for, because we came home early. Coming home early was his idea not mine.

You seem to have some confusion..

You are making the assumption that the offender is my friend. They may have been at one time, maybe even a long time.
The thing is I would not want those kind of people as friends. So what bridge do you see me burning here, that the offender has not already blown up..?

This whole episode really boils down to two choices: a legal choice and an ethical choice. I like your idea of talking it over with a CO. I suspect, if you drop his name in the conversation, that will give the MNRF a heads-up on keeping an eye on this joker, that maybe as far as your legal choice can take you. The fact that you have made a decision to distance yourself from the individual, sounds like, that is about as far as your ethical choice can go. Drawing this community into your dilemma certainly has provided some food for thought, and perhaps it may demonstrate to those of the non-hunter community, that might have the occasions to tune in on us, that not all hunters are “insensitive A-holes.”

Unfortunately JUDGE found himself in a really crappy situation, one which most of the big talkers here have never found themselves in... guaranteed.

Not so easy to toss aside a relationship with a family member or longtime friend for over a stupid decision on a hunting trip. What the OP did was hard enough to do already.

So you can guarantee I never turned my Dad's friend in for not notching his Caribou tags on a hunt in 1981 in Northern Saskatchewan..as well as chasing them on his sled and shooting them .

Miles from town, so no phone or cell phones at the time. But you know 😏 radios have always been something I liked... Couple words to a trapper along the way and guess who was waiting for us the next day. To this day the A'hole thinks he got caught on a random check.

You might know someone for 20 or 30 years and they can still do something that you weren't expecting, and then you have a real decision to make.

Anyway... it takes more than "a pair" to throw away a relationship over a stupid decision, at least in my opinion.

I did testimony in court as part of the investigation. He tried to fight it.. The questions I had to answer were well "Constructed " .

"Did you notice that he had not cut out the date on his tag?" Yes. " Did you at any time point out to him that they had not been notched? " Yes. "You do understand the regulations it would seem as you did properly notch out the date on your tag. "......

All I had to do was answer yes or no to the questions.

Well done on your part. I don't think the OP's scenario is the same though. There really isn't any way around the guy knowing who reported him, and that's the key difference.
