Algonquin Land Claim update
Have your say to ensure hunting is permitted in these newly expanded/created proposed provincial parks in Eastern Ontario.

I've been hearing this process is grinding closer to a final conclusion.
As an aside, I'd bet a lot of $ that previously undeveloped Crown land lakes are suddenly going to have cottage/recreational property development fast tracked the minute the deal is finally ratified ...

If this goes through,a lot of properties will be hitting the market as people dump cottages just to get rid of them for whatever they can get unless the government does a "buy back" scheme to compensate owners. No non FN people in their right mind would ever buy a property where they couldn't get a clear title. Cottagers may own a building,but,they'll never own the property it sits on.
If a tree falls on your ex in the woods and nobody hears it,you should probably still get rid of your chainsaw. Just sayin'....

After these land claim arrangements are finished will it mean our Parliament Buildings will no longer be sitting on unceded land?

Our family has an old camp in Algonquin Park. You're sooooo right about leased land. The MNR is charging us $6000 a year and there's no winter access. If the First Nations take their clues from the MNR or the bands that border Lake Huron or Georgian Bay I would suggest smart people should decline leases in the settlement area. I think the First Nations are going to build their cottages all over the new leased properties anyway.

Several cottages on FN land in Peterborough County had the leases canceled. Some of the cottages were quite nice. FN paid the cottagers a nominal amount for the buildings,then,told them to leave. There was no choice except for them to do so. FN people simply took over the cottages for their own use. Non FN people on their land have no rights,whatsoever. The only thing they can do is leave. With a land claim 1/3 the size of southern Ontario,look for the rant and raving to start when people find out what they've been ignoring for the last 8 years. Ignorance is bliss until it comes back to kick your arse.

Yea the whole Land claim affair has been going on for a long time. With all this talk of reconciliation with land claims etc taking front and center, you better grab what you can because some folks will be getting nothing.

This grab is huge, towns are part of the take. Property values have not been effected with the exit Toronto rush on the real-estate. As a current land owner we were told that we would retain ownership of the property. My concern is the crown land surrounding us, access to the property and who will control the fishing regulations, hunting rights..... plus lumber, sale of gasoline and tobacco.

The FN have assured landowners they won't expropriate private landowners. They will have control over access though for large areas of the crown land. In our area the moose hunt for nonFN hunters is down to 32 tags last time I looked (that includes bulls, cows and calves). The FN hunt is slowly growing strength and the nonFN hunt is on life support. The FN hunt is becoming better organized and policed by their own COs but there doesn't appear to be any willingness to share the resource equally. All FN hunters still get a calf tag with no lottery.
