Only four times since 1804 when the 12th Amendment was inserted into the constitution has the popular vote not jived with the electoral collage, and the most votes cast by the population, did not win. In 1876, 1888, 2000, and 2016. You remember the last two, Bush Jr. and trump. When the one with the most votes does not win, it is a small cabal of insiders deciding who will lead the country, no matter what the majority of the populations wishes are . It was enacted to give the slave owning states with little populations of eligible voters more power to decide who would become president, and vise-president. So it was to appease powerful slave owners. If it happens in 2 elections in a row after only 3 other times in 216 years, something is amiss. The senate is a sham, each state gets 2 senators no matter their population, California with 18 million people per senator down to Wyoming with 284 thousand people per senator. So one vote in Wyoming is worth 64 times more than in California. Fair? And T21 , Lincoln made the speech but it was Grant who won the war that enabled it, and when Lincoln was assassinated, Grant was the one who implemented it. Lincoln gets the credit, but Grant was the workhorse.
