    Default Deer hunting help

So I’m not sure if I should post this in the big game forum or here. My son has renewed my interest in hunting and I am thinking about going deer hunting next year. I am hoping someone can help me out a little bit in terms of how the application process works, controlled hunts, and when I need to have my applications in. I know I could read the refs but I’m hoping someone could fill me in with the Coles Notes version. I live in the Barrie area And was thinking of hunting locally here. I have also been reading up on how to field dress and butcher my own game

    thanks

I dont mean to be blunt....but read the regulations. They are the coles notes version of the applicable laws.

Specifically, you need to narrow down where exactly you are hunting and go from there.

    Well Rao,

Think we need a few more specifics,do you already have your PAL ,do you have your hunter accreditation.

The biggest obstacle to a new hunter these day's in my opinion is a place to go,a lot of public land is busy and a lot of private land is locked off to hunters or already taken. So as you may know each hunting area comes under a WMU Wildlife Management Unit and depending on which one you chose to hunt in will depend if there is a controlled hunt, what firearms you can use and at what times of the year.

Drop into a local sporting good's store or a service Ontario office and get a summary of the regulations, easy to read and better than the online reg's to go through.

Yes I have my pal and hunting accreditation. I have Been duck hunting on and off for years. SoI am not a new hunter. I also have a place to hunt so that is not as not an issue. I also have a shotgun with rifled barrel and a nice marlin lever action. I will drop into a sporting goods store for a copy of the regs but in the mean time can some give me a brief run down

RAO-many areas have Controlled deer hunt-where You will need to apply-be drawn ,to be able to hunt. With shotgun. In the Controlled week.

    Many do not.
So You buy the tag,and good to go buck hunting, any open season(except Controlled season-where applicable)and with applicable firearm or bow, as season dictates.

Where you want to hunt is the first question?
No need for GPS coordinates, just City or Municipality-WMU would be the best, but You may need to find that out.

Go to www.ontario.ca/hunting and look up the regs.
You said you had a place to hunt, but your lucky also that Simcoe county has over 50000 acres of public forest to hunt (you need to be a member if the OFAH for their liability insurance).
Once you have checked out the online regs, THEN you can start asking questions on here for clarification.
