X2. O'Toole is very media savvy knowing full well that allowing Sloan to stay on paints a huge target on the party as alt right KKK members. The leftist,bought-and-paid-for Liberal main stream media propaganda machine would have a hay day. This effectively takes the wind right out of their sails. Well played,Mr. O'Toole, well played.
If a tree falls on your ex in the woods and nobody hears it,you should probably still get rid of your chainsaw. Just sayin'....

A media savvy political leader would never go and announce that he believed "residential schools" were set up to educate aboriginal people and were a good thing. So he has managed to shot himself in the foot and now will have to wear his remarks into the next election campaign.
So he has got rid of one racist and now looks like he is a racist himself, why do you guy's keep voting in a three legged donkey to run in a thorough breed race.

There's a classic example of giving the media ammunition to use against oneself by making a comment that could be easily misconstrued and turned against you that required a clarification which was acceptable to the Council of the Grand Chiefs and the Reconciliation Commission. That was a good lesson for all Conservatives. Unfortunately, the only person that didn't get with the program was Sloan,so,out he went.

[QUOTE=Gilroy;1142207] he managed to upset the vast majority of Canadians with his remark about residential schools being set up to "educate" the aboriginal population.]
Unfortunately he suffered from speaking the truth, as did others if the record of the recorded history of residential schools holds any merit. Not only politicians of the time were in favor of these schools but elders and tribal chiefs also thought the schools would be good for their children as it would give them opportunities in the new emerging world. Unfortunately these schools quickly turned into sweat shops due to a lack of funding and because educators of the day knew little or cared little about native culture. Once the schools operations were handed over in their entirety to religious sects did they truly become the horror show we know of today.
So in effect, people like O'Toole are speaking accurately based on actual history while his critics are really the clueless ones.

Very well put Sawbill......the 'intent' of the intervention was valid and encouraged by one and all at the time. The problem was the execution of the program and using the Church to run it.

And Indigenous children remain left behind to this day:

In Canada, 52.2% of children in foster care are Indigenous, but account for only 7.7% of the child population according to Census 2016. This means 14,970 out of 28,665 foster children in private homes under the age of 15 are Indigenous.

Results from the 2011 National Household Survey also show that 38% of Indigenous children in Canada live in poverty, compared to 7% for non-Indigenous children.
It's just a topic were not allowed to speak off openly...

Well I must disagree the only clueless one here is O'Toole trying to score a few political points by pointing out the schools were still being opened under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. If we go by your argument then Trudeau should get CREDIT for continuing the schools?

Sloan is a separate infesting sore for the Conservative party and is apart from the self inflicted wound O'Toole gave himself for the residential schools remark. The continual underlying theme haunting the Conservative party is one of being seen a racist or in worse case scenario's as white supremist, people VOTED FOR SLOAN.

Just so we are all on the same page.
O'Toole is clueless for trying to score points for pointing out schools were opened by PET.
JT is all that and meets that high bar for trying to score points by blaming Harper for everything, whether accurate or not..except maybe opening schools

Man, I wish we had emojis here. Different rules for different folks
    /wide eyed shock
    /smile

I have yet to know a politician that doesn't play those games. But for whatever reason, Liberals pharts smell like roses and they can use wedge issues, attack ads, try to score cheap political points, whatever and get passes. But when cons do it...
