Winter Beaver Hunt

Have some nuisance beavers on the property we just purchased. Looking to solve that issue this winter. Besides trapping (don't have a license) is there a good way to hunt/get rid of beavers during the winter? Have heard to mess with their den's which lures them out to assess damage and try to fix them. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hard to do this time of year as the ice has set in. Where is the property located and there may be some trappers on here that might help you out

they usually have ways to get under the ice this time of year im pretty sure hard time for it come spring youll start to see them around the dams

If you can contact the closest trappers association. Might as well utilize the animal if possible.

Beaver in winter under the ice are not going to cause you issues. They go from the lodge to feed pile to bank den and repeat as necessary. All under the ice.

Once the ice comes off they will be out looking for fresh feed.

Wrote about this awhile ago, got the same problem up at my place. Local trapper not interested in coming out as he had not even sold his pelts from previous year, did suggest later $100.00 per beaver trapped and $100.00 for each visit.

SSS would work in the Spring I suppose but its illegal and would get you in trouble.

I think a lot of trappers are doing work for Municipal Governments and its probably easier money to trap from the side of a road.

The beavers must be doing damage to your property in order to be destroyed.

A buddy out in BC said it was much more lucrative to trap nuisance beavers for the municipality, than try to sell fur.....pretty sad actually !

Appreciate the help. Looks like we might need to wait for spring. Was really hoping the idea of F**king with their den to encourage them to come out and fix it idea might work but maybe a little far fetched.

You might get lucky if you have otters in the area that are known to enter a beaver house and kill either pups or sizeable adults.

Contact your local MNRF office or the one of the various trappers associations. That would be the first step. A licensed trapper can at least make use of the fur rather then it going to waste.
