Default Okanagan city pulls the trigger on goose cull

the BC city wants to spend 41000 dollars to cull 100-150 geese when there is about 5000 around. Why not save the money and let hunters do it at least the meat wont be wasted
Vernon has had enough of poop-filled parks and beaches and is taking aim at the culprits.
An over-population of geese in the area is causing concerns for water quality, health and tourism impacts. While scare tactics and egg addling are used, the city will now be spending an additional $41,000 to cull (kill) 100-150 geese.
]“These are invasive species there’s no way around it,” said Coun. Dalvir Nahal, who brought forward the suggestion at council’s Jan. 25 meeting.

Reading from a Kelowna Capital News article, Nahal said the geese were introduced to the area in the 1960s. While they were once hunted, that practice has not been sustained and the geese have become a nuisance.
“We’ve got Kin Beach unusable, Marshall Fields is just covered and Polson Park is also unusable,” Coun. Scott Anderson said.
But with 70 nests found in Vernon in 2020 during the egg addling program, it’s unknown how much impact this cull will have.
Why are we only doing 100-150? We have 5,000 geese. What’s 100 going to do? Is 100 going to have an impact?” Coun. Akbal Mund questioned]Neighbouring jurisdictions will also be contacted to see if they can help control the population.
“Our neighbours to the north are not actually part of the addling program and aren’t doing anything to help the problem,” Coun. Kari Gares pointed out.
Federal and provincial approvals will be needed, therefore it’s unknown if the cull can take place this spring while the geese are molting.City staff will also need to investigate when and where the geese congregate to determine the most effective time for the cull.

They could make money on that endeavour by just charging Hunters $2 for a tag. They would cull it down to 1/2 the population in no time.

I wonder what the method will be for this cull?

I'd gladly pay a couple bucks if I lived there to fill my freezer with meat. Even by bow you could certainly achieve the desired results.

Wait-what happened to the animal rights ,to the PETA goals, to all the bleeding hearts....is the lawn more important then all those geese? How they are going to explain this to all Green Peace Warriors?

After all-what happened to the common sense?
    273 $ per goose(if they cull 150 geese-if less,cost goes up per capita).

Wow ,they have money to throw away for sure.

So, the geese were introduced to the area to be hunted. So what caused the hunting not to be sustained? Another case of a good hunting area being over run by urban sprawl? So just exactly who is the invasive specie? It would appear that all the finger pointing is being aimed in the wrong direction. Another prime example of urban planning gone a muck. Why is not the impact of human population spread on nature, a primary factor in making development decisions? Oh, I got it the hunter were suppose to take care of the goose problem before any urbanization move in. No regulated hunting practices are about conservation of wildlife not its extinction. So those poor urbanites have to tread their new surrounding litter with goose droppings. Would have made more sense to leave the area free of human population as a hunting preserve. Oh, dear what would they to do with all the people?

You don't stop hunting because you grow old. You grow old because you stop hunting.

They just could pay hunters some money for each goose. Such a waste..
