Well, no real budget, just don't want to over buy...

x2. If you are buying a Windows based system you can never have too much RAM. Don't try to get by with the bare minimum (RAM, hard drive, or processor), as you will soon come to regret it. That's my experience, anyway.

Has too much time on their hands
I bought an Acer for around $350 a few years back to replace our Acer that was 12 years old (it's still working too). It does everything we need.
Like you Fratri, we needed one for the house to handle everything from Netflix to online school and no issues to date. I believe it was 1TB storage and 8GB memory. We found that Acer got us the highest specs for the least amount of money.

It depends on what your doing my PC is 10 years old has 8 gigs memory I can still do programming on it.
99% of people who buy a PC will never come close to using the power they buy. Unless you are a gamer.
Generally I recommend a minimum 8 Gigs and 1 terabyte drive.
These would be still close to the budget.

I'd personally recommend Chromebook, there are sales on them now.
good enough for simple things, it might require your Google Account to register as a login (optional) or Microsoft Sync.
