I've been burning wood for about 50 years - this year is the first time I ran out of wood - the cold weather since the middle of February has caused me to run out - had about 5 full cords going into the winter - had about 90% ash - as soon as weather gets better have to start for next winter

I always figured oak was the last to leaf in the spring. It is the last to lose its leaves though. Trouble with ash is it doesn't give off the BTU's that oak or maple does. Like you say, its nice to split and burns clean down to nothing.

Yup, I’m quite jealous when guys mention they’ve a wood lot full of ash, now I guess the idea is to cut and use all the deadwood before it falls and rots

Thats what I've noticed too, poplar first and oak is last. The only tree that holds its leaves longer is beech but they dry out long before falling.

I too like burning ash as it splits like butter and light easily but for those long winter nights it doesn't quite cut it, especially if you get one of those lovely nights nearing 40 below. I've been on a two year run of solid oak, last far longer but the slivers suck!

I started selling firewood on a significant level in the latter days of ash removal. It really helped because it drys quick or is somewhat dry already from being dead. They say its ready to burn green but I would always season it and not depend on that idea.

I used to get endless loads of ash. Ive filled 40 yard bins with ash only (6 bush cords) for customer orders. Arborists were getting jobs to cut dozens of trees at a time.

Best burning Iron Wood, I mostly get ash followed by elm and some maple.

I installed a new heat pump good to -27 Celsius (-16.6 F) and use it mostly during the warmer times above -10 Celsius (14 F) below that I get the fire going. I also don't have to worry if the fire goes out when I am not home or if I am asleep, so occasionally it has run when it was -20 Celsius .

I cut my firewood amount to less then 5 face cords or about 1 1/2 bush cords. I still find a fire nicer.

Since I have 30 face out back I am good for at least 6 more years. I will still go cut at least 10 face this year and probably sell 5.
