Default What happened to rifle scopes?

It's been a quite few years since I went scope shopping. I had thought finding a simple low-powered (1x-4x) variable or fixed scope with a 1" tube and standard cross hairs would be easy enough. What I found instead were silly tactical scopes in 30mm tubes that need a battery for the light, have massive target turrets and ballistic reticles some of which looked more like my high school geometry exams than proper cross hairs.

Are modern rifle shooters so lacking in skills they need all this high-tech crap in their scopes? What happened to the simple cross hair or post reticles and the ability to judge range and wind?

Have you tried to by a simple bench seat P/U truck for farm use ?? I was told I would need to order a 'fleet' vehicle.

The market is driven by the consumer...and we all know that when it comes to guns nowadays the more bells and whistles the better it sells.

Your right about scopes...I had to order online to get a fixed x4....

I find nowadays anything fishing and hunting related has gone into the sci/fi realm. Seems the market is driven by the oooh awe factour.

You need a good scope to shoot ants at 1000 m.

Check Epps, last time I looked they had a few left over low power Bushnell.
I might of seen something also at Dante’s sport.

Thanks. I eventually did find a nice Leupold 1x-4x that will fill the bill.

I've been saying this for a year or 2. Since new offerings from bushnell and zeiss have come out, it's hard to find something simple that just puts the emphasis on good glass. That's why I liked the nikons, but they are no more either. My brother paid $1200 for a chinese made scorpion last year with every option on it you'd never want on a hunting scope. Probably even made popcorn. But it won't help if you can't make an animal out at first and last light. More money than brains.

The only real great thing thats happened lately in the scope industry is that quality control has improved so much that many companies are offering lifetime unconditional repair/replacement warranties.

Vortex makes some low powered scopes with a plain reticle. Bushnell still does as well. Fixed power are very hard to find. I think Burris may make one but getting one is another story.

I bought an inexpensive no frills scope in my case I wanted a large tube but I got a 3X9X40 with no frills it suits my needs. I actually bought 3 of them one for my shotgun shooting slugs and 1 for my sons and 1 for my 270.
