You owe it to the bird to make sure you're using the most effective equipment for killing turkeys possible. Putting off a $30-$50 purchase makes zero sense.

Sure, people miss turkeys with tight chokes in close, but I'd much rather have a clean miss then put a few pellets into the lower neck or body and have the bird fly off and die elsewhere.

A good point of reference for killing density is at least 100 pellets in a 10" circle.

ah i see, we usually either hunt on fence lines or on a corn field on the bush line, someone else was telling me about hunting in the bush as they come closer, thought i might give that a try this year. well see i guess, i appreciate the input greatly!

This is where knowing your shotgun and how it performs. A turkey choke will tighten the pattern and extend your range by enabling you to put more pellets in the head and neck. Pellets anywhere else is just peppering the meat. Granted the tighter the choke the less margin for error at close range as the pattern hasn't expanded.
A more open choke opens the pattern a little sooner giving you a little more margin for error but soon the pattern opens up to where again you're putting pellets in the body.
For me factory full is what I use as extended ranges I don't take. I Know the point of impact for my gun and can adjust accordingly for anywhere up close to out to 40 ish.

what is everyone using in terms of sight ?
I use a benelli supernova.
so far been using the small factory red optic.
thinking of getting a red dot sight. or even one of those extended ones ? or waste of money ?

i have a after market rail on my gun that allows me to either look through my scope

or under my rail down the barrel and line my bead sight up like i would if i had no rail on it.


i had a red dot on my gun until recently actually. i enjoyed the red dot alot, the only problem was either forgeting to turn the sight on or off LOL as is was one of the TRU GLO red dots.

Well improved is okay however it would greatly reduce your options and you would really have to know your limits and abide by them. Fuller choke just extends those limits

For me a scope is a waste of money. Main thing with shooting is keeping proper form. Granted when you have a full strut tom taking an eternity to come over its hard to keep cheek to stock and eye down the barrel. You'd be surprised how easy eyes come off the bead and you end up staring at the whole bird. Been there and done that as a newbie resulting in shooting nothing but air. If you're prone to turkey fever a scope would help

Used to run a red dot, but had a few times where I forgot to turn the sight down and pulled up on a bird at first light only to have to move to turn the brightness back down. Burned me more than once.

Now running a Styrka S5 1.75-5 scope and will never look back.

No matter WHAT you bought, be sure to pattern it on paper, because every gun performs differently, and you may NOT get the best pattern with a particular choke, no matter what the choke manufacturer says. I bought 3 extended “turkey” chokes to try in my 12Ga Benelli Nova before I found one that actually gave me tighter patterns than the Full choke tube that came with the gun.
Then, you will also find you will get different patterns using the same choke with different brands of shells. My gun never patterned Federal shells very well, but the Winchester Long Beard loads give awesome patterns with it!

thanks alot !, when i bought this shotgun it only came with 1 choke. my dad has a 11-87 with 3 or 4 chokes so i think weve switched them out and about, i use my 870 for deer and turkey now so thats why ive switched to a scope i had laying around, i will be in the market hopefully for a lower magnification. the rail i have on my gun allows me to look down the bead sight so ill be using that for turkey hopefully. will be sighting in again when everything is mounted and ready.
