For me a scope is a waste of money. Main thing with shooting is keeping proper form. Granted when you have a full strut tom taking an eternity to come over its hard to keep cheek to stock and eye down the barrel. You'd be surprised how easy eyes come off the bead and you end up staring at the whole bird. Been there and done that as a newbie resulting in shooting nothing but air. If you're prone to turkey fever a scope would help

Me too, no optics on the my 870; never found a need for a scope. My gun shoots where I place the bead. However what you described happened to my son on his first and only opportunity to-date; he shot clean over the tom's head.

what is everyone using in terms of sight ?
I use a benelli supernova.
so far been using the small factory red optic.
thinking of getting a red dot sight. or even one of those extended ones ? or waste of money ?

You don't really need anything more than the red factory bead on your shotgun. I've had a few occasions where I've been impatient while watching jakes and thought a scope would have helped me see the beard a bit sooner, but I don't think it's ever cost me a shot at a bird.

I can't remember if we've gone over chairs in this thread, but being able to sit comfortably helps an awful lot. Invest in a good seat or cushion after your have your basics covered.

TSC/Peavy sell Fibre Optic sights that are cheap and easy to install..they work great.

CT has a really comfy Turkey chair, sits low and has good back support. It'll go on sale before the season opens for around $30.

I put an aftermarket HOODED bead sight on the front of my Benelli Nova, and you can’t see the bead unless your aligned properly down the barrel...raise your head off the barrel plane and the bead disappears. Bought it to Correct for off dominant eye, but it forces you to stay down on barrell also.

Even with a scope don't think it would of matter for this tom. Had to wait till he strutted to within yards off me to id the beard. The hard part was sitting still enough till he continued to stroll out to 20 yards.

look up b square mount or saddle mounts for your supernova, im sure they make them for that gun. the 2 pins in your trigger assembley come out and the saddle screws install through there. no drilling or tapping needed.

If you use your gun only for turkey hunting get it drilled and tapped - you will not be disappointed. For turkey hunting I have used a red dot, holo sight, various fiber sights and a scope and have settled with the Burris 1-4 scope. It is bright and, very durable and does not rely on batteries. Drilling and mounting a rail is an easy job for an experienced gunsmith and will be more solid than a saddle mount.

I also made a dedicated deer slugger - Beretta AL391 with a 26" bbl and a 24" cantilever rifle slug bbl. I have a cheap 1.75-4x 32mm Bushnell Trophy shotgun scope mounted on it right now. I am thinking of taking the gun in to get drilled/tapped and adding a rail and then cutting off the cantilever scope mount off the barrel and then take my Vortex Viper PST 1-4 off my AR and mount it on my 391.

A red dot, nor any other sight will help with wingshooting. The best "sight" for wingshooting is a simple unassuming bead at the end of your barrel.
