Fiddle Heads
Checked out a couple of my spots and there was no sign of them. My son went to one of his spots and they were up and opened for the most part. Said he had to look hard to find ones that were just coming up to get a good feed..
How are you guys making out that pursue this edible....

I was out the other day at two different spots and got 4.5 lb. Not bad for 1st pick. Be back out in a few days. Now I just have to wait for the leeks to swell up more so I can pick them without disturbing the root systems.

Nothing to offer as I've never harvested them. The reason being that I've always heard there are 2 varieties and one of them being toxic. Any help in identifying them?

The edible ones usually grow in wetter areas and only have one long stem that unfurls. The toxic ones usually grow in drier areas and they have have one stem that can split into 2-3 branches.

The stem of the Ostrich fern is grooved like a celery stalk. I never pick them any more than 3" high, the shorter the better.

They grow real quick once they start. These ones are maybe a week past picking time. Pretty hard to confuse them with other ferns. They grow out of raised clumps.

Does one stalk that grows in this area (E.Ontario) not have little hairs or is furry and the other is smooth also? Been so long and don't really remember which is which. Will be heading out today to the turkey woods and swamp for a look-see.

Ostrich fern has a smooth stem, those other ones aren't edible.

None to be found where I was, but did see a few ferns/fiddlehead look-a-likes that were dark red stems and really thin, maybe 1/8" max I never noticed before.
Oh, and no turkey to be seen or heard, but they really like to show up on the cams often all last week lol.
