    Default Tom Down

Spotted a hen 300 yards away in the back corner of the field. Crawled slowly and set-up my bobing head hen and jake decoys 25 yards in the field, in front of the three line I was in. Hided in the bush line underneath a young spruce three, with rich bottom branches touching the ground. It was a perfect setup, lots of shadows, yet had decent room to maneuver my gun’s barrel.
Waited for the spot to settle down, and heard a gobbling coming from far in the swamps, behind the field corner.
Gave a couple of loud calls with my box, heard some gobblings answering, but slightly fading away. Then heard gobblings again, and responded with aggressive box and gobbling calls, cutting them off.
And, finally, picked two shadows with my binos on the other side of the field, far away. They were coming but took their time, stopping to strut & gobble, and pick from the ground. I gave soft combined calls with my box and mouth call, and the Toms were coming in, slowly. Obviously, they did not come for a fight, just joining the “party”! Took them 20 minutes or so to close-in. A hen also showed-up in the field, and was also coming 150 yards behind the Toms. Gave some final mouth call soft purrs, then waited quietly for the Toms get well within my range.
My shotgun roared once, and one Tom dropped in his tracks. 21 lbs, 9” beard, matching 3/4“ spurs.
The funny thing is that the other Tom and the hen did not know what just happened, and stayed in my range for a long time. Texted my hunting buddy a couple of times, the turkeys heard the incoming message sounds and just putted softly ad moved around, not wanting to leave. Had to slowly wave at them! The hen finally decided to walk away across the field; the Tom circled me behind in the bush. He gobbled once more, and finally left as well.
    It was a great show!
