There are not thousands of unsuspecting Canadians being declined and the odd time that you hear of one making the nightly news, it's pretty obvious that there was a pre-existing condition. Like the 9 month pregnant lady that decided to jump on a plane and take one last vacation to the Caribbean before the baby arrived. She was raging mad on the news demanding the insurance company pay her claim.........she didn't get a dime from them and rightfully so.
I've personally used travel insurance a number of times and never had an issue.

A simple goggle check will revel plenty on pre existing conditions loop holes. Donald TRUMP saw it was such an issue that he was going to pass legislation to force insurance companies to cover folk's with pre existing conditions.
