Making a Double a little more interesting
The son, TurkeyWes, and I headed to the woods this afternoon for an afternoon hunt instead of our usual morning hunt. He was done his online school for the day and I left the office a little early for an wee hunt.
We get to one of our usual spots, checking for birds all the way in, calling as we go and waiting for a response.... and nothing.
So we get to the spot and set up our usual go to trap, strutter decoy, hen and a Jake. We do a little calling, a little waiting... not much happening...Wes has his crossbow at the ready while he studies for a test tomorrow. I sit with the shotgun just watching and waiting...
After about a half hour, Wes looks up from his studies and asks, “Dad, do you want to walk up and over that hill to see if there’s any birds in the cornfield?”....
Sure I answer, “But only if you get back to studying when we get back?”
Wes is leading the way, crossbow in hand, I’m a little behind, we just get over the hill and Wes hits the ground like a Ninja or something... I instinctively drop as well...
“There’s some Jake’s down the bend to the left, I don’t know if they saw me or not”
I look in the direction he suggested and I can indeed see a red head through some brush, then I see another, then another...they look like they’re angling our way so we try to get as small as possible and wait...
As predicted, they start coming our way, beards confirmed, not huge but there’s beards to see...
I take a bead on I think the biggest and let him have it, down he goes...
Surprisingly, his buddies don’t bail, they’re just hanging there...I chuck another shell and ask Wes if he wanted to take another... I can see the wheels turning after him taking his big Tom on the opener... he takes the gun and boom... another Jake goes down with the same gun.
Not monsters, mine was 16 lbs with a 4 inch beard, 1/4 inch nubs for Spurs, Wes’ just a bit smaller, 15 lbs beard a little longer and the same nubs for Spurs..
Another awesome hunt with the Wes, a double no less...
So he’s tagged out, I still have to get my Tom, but the season is early yet...what a blast, or two...

So Wes is the first guy to enter a bird in this years contest, and now the first to enter a second bird!
Pretty good season young man!!! Congratulations
