I remember a program in the 80's near Barrie Ont. Workers on Welfare we're bussed out to the Military Base Borden to do landscape maintenance. Some were doing cleaning of the ditches along the highways. It didn't last long, the Unions fought with the government that they were taking work away from Unionised members.

This poorly run CERB program gave out $81.6 Billion of our taxes with little to no oversight. Hundreds of stories of misuse. Local story I have first hand knowledge of was a family of 4 including 2 teens living at home with after school part time jobs...they all drew CERB...$8K a month going into a single-family home. Emergency Benefits ??

It's obvious there are jobs out there, hopefully the Government cracks down on these folks that are more than happy to sit at home as long as the money is flowing.

Hahahaha, goes back to the long standing joke, what's yellow and black and sleeps 6? A double cab truck with 6 CE workers. For those that don't know, CE workers are those lazy civilian union workers. Used to find 3 or 4 trucks at the dump and all you could see were socks in the windows.

If you think about it, these workers are not the problem, it's the system (their bosses) that lets them behave this way. I remember years back an electrician friend of mine went from working in the private sector to the public sector (got hired by the city). The first thing his boss told him was to not outpace the current workers. He soon realized the less enthusiastic he was about doing the work, the better he got treated. It got to the point were he said "now they have to hit me over the head to get me up to do any work"...
But even these guys at least have a duty to report and do some work..... It's all those others that get paid for staying home and do nothing that really annoy me.

What is a living wage? What is suitable? what should gross income be per annual? Be interested to see your response.

And those go to the business do they not?

Perhaps if those business paid a living wage, people might be more interested.

I had to claim CERB last year for 5 months and have claimed CRCB ($450/wk) this year for 2 months and counting. I should be able to go back to work in mid July if my parents can help out with childcare, but they didn't retire to babysit so it hasn't been easy.

Some things have changed this year. I think coverage is cut to 300/wk in July. You now have to provide the name of the institution that is closed and the information for your dependents (children 12 and under) who are at home. The fine print also says if I make more than $38500 this year, I may have to pay back "some or the entire amount of benefits received".

Seems the criteria to qualify has tightened up from last year too, but I'm sure there's still plenty of room for abuse.

Keep in mind that not everyone claiming a form of CRB is abusing things, it's been nice to have available when both parents are essential workers and schools are closed.

Maybe start by realizing some jobs are not careers. If you increase minimum wage everything goes up including everyone elses salary. Last time we increased minimum wage everything went up the same amount.

A better solution is to get an education.

By the way it was in the CBC that people are turning down jobs paying upwards of 25 bucks an hour. So if you increase mininum wage to that then people like me are going to demand the same increase. So your still back at square one.

When I was still working we used to get several Ontario Hydro guys come in, supposedly, for their lunch hour. Three hours later, they started thinking about leaving. Always PI$$ED me off. They thought it was funny, screwing the public for their time in the gun store. Wonder why Hydro rates are the way they are?

Funny you should mention that GW...just saw that a farm down in S/W Ont pays its agricultural workers $25 /hr....and can't fill the spots with Ontario residents so they have to bring in foreign pickers.

Heavy construction for infrastructure in the GTA pays labourers 40+/hr and are screaming for guys every year they don't even care if you are useless as long as you show up. And a ton of the the ones they have can barely make it to work at that rate. I think it's human nature to take the path of least resistance. There's always winners, and always will be losers.
