I find that mass can be deceiving when bucks are in velvet. IMO, more reliable indicators of the size of the rack are the spread and tine length. Looks like a nice buck though.

I tend to look at the potential of a rack based on the bases when they are in the early phase of growth.

Deer dont turn nocturnal. Their home region is just huge. If you think a deer is nocturnal because you only get night pics its because their coming back from their feeding area after dusk and going back to the bedding area. The more mature the deer the smaller their home region turns.
Great pics again Mike [emoji108]

Good point Mike. I do the same. You can a decent rack is shaping up by mid-june.

Not sure where you got that from.
Deer do turn nocturnal if they are disturbed during daylight hours. I don't think you'll find a deer hunter that doesn't know that.
Deer home ranges are small - a couple of square miles - and it's not dependent on age.

Been reading plenty of books that say otherwise.

Since I started to put out Tail Cams year round and I'm the only human pressure on about 600 acres, I tend to lean that they are naturally nocturnal. Most all my buck Trail Cam pics, like 90% are nighttime, year round. The ones I post here are selected from 400-600 pics in a week and I'm lucky if I get one or two daytime time captures. This is during May/Jun/July.
Deer supposedly move about 5 times a day, mostly for food and water. I found a big bedding area last year that I plan to put a trail cam over and see if I can figure out the timing a little better.
This changes however during the rut when all the bucks I have been watching in night pics all year start to show themselves during daylight hours, around 18 Nov in this area.

Most of the property I watch is in between two feeding areas. Most of the activity I see is late afternoon on the way to feed in the corn /soy fields at night. Then again just after dawn as they are heading back in the bedding areas.
Sit on a field all evening..nothing.....drive by the same field 2 hrs later and all you see is sets of eyes in your headlights

Yes so realisticly you are only catching them when they come to feed in the field, which is usually at dusk and then again at dawn. This does not mean they are sleeping all day though. They can very well be on the other side of their home range during those hours or traveling in the deep brush.
Once their winter coat starts to come in you see them less and less as well as they'll start to stay in the bush even more to stay more cool when its still warm
. If you find a nice clearing in the middle of the bush that has over head tree cover thats where the big guys go to feed during the daylight hours.
Sure its easier to just say the deer is nocturnal and call it a day but thats not the case. Its actually one of the bigger myths out there.
