Our money doesn’t matter to our government anymore, it’s about throwing money at any group who will take it and pledge support

My question is..Why is it the taxpayer's responsibility to provide the Indigenous with clean drinking water?
If you build a house outside any city in Ontario, it's YOUR responsibility to pay the $15 K to have a well dug to access water. If the water you get is tainted..it's your problem to install various filters etc to make it drinkable.
Or you move.....
For a nation of people that preaches they live off the land...why do they continue to live in an area for 20+ yrs where the water is tainted...move !!
I guess in all fairness, all costs associated with having clean drinking water should be a right of ALL Canadians...just submit the bills and wait for them to reimburse you HaHa..

I think the need for clean drinking water is a real one.
The problem is how much of the 8 billion will actually be spent on water?
If you want to fix a First Nation problem you don't give them the money, you go out and pay to get the work done while closely overseeing and monitoring the whole process.
Harper was on to something with mother Theresa in Attawapiskat.

I'm guessing it's because it is on land that was designated by the government for a reserve. If there is not good water on the government provided land, I would think that it is the government's responsibility to correct the issue, either through purification or providing another area for them to live that meets the needs.

Agree 100%. Instead of just cutting them a cheque, the government should step in to have the work done. It would likely be overpriced if they contracted the job, but at least it would get done, and not become the continual money pit that the current situation is.
I also believe that there should be some sort of accountability for the money being designated for various uses. Somebody needs to ensure the money is being used as designated.

Interesting graphic from Indigenous Services Canada.
As for MikePal’s comments, we, the collective people of Canada, elected the previous governments who put them on the reservations. So access to clean water, which is fundamental human right, seems like a good enough reason.

That isn't the goal or concern of this government though... Harper put in basic accounting and disclosure requirements and the Libs took it out.

It's a free for all on the money and spending in Ottawa and the crooked chiefs (NOT ALL) are having a field day it seems incase they have to actually be open and disclose spending in the future.
They should have clean water available of course but the whole Indian Act is a relic of the late 1800's, I think same year as Custer's Last Stand so over 140 years ago. The race based sh** should go, make the reserves corporations and accounting required. Close reserves or let people move if they want, just dumping them on a ghetto like reserve is a waste of money and an insult. We have Chinatown and Greek town in Canada's largest city and "Indian town" in some run down bush with poor housing and dirty water.... all based on race. Scrap the Indian act and help those that need help, the bureaucracy and idiocy need to get flushed in the septic!

I'll guarantee you, 10 years from now the money will have been squandered with no accounting and no bread crumb trail to see where it went. And to top it off, the problem will still be there.

You mean like the $Billions they've already received and still live in squalid conditions for the lack of a can of paint and some household cleaners.
.....at least that's the image that is portrayed on CBC when they want sympathy.
