Moose in muddy predicament rescued by men in Timmins, Ont.

Wild animal stuck in mud up to its head was pulled free with straps and Argo ATV

With the help of a couple of men from Timmins a moose is now moving freely in the bush.

Last Wednesday, a friend had called prospectors Maurice Valliere and Pat Greba to come out to the bush, north of the northeastern Ontario city, where a male moose had become stuck in mud.

Before attempting the rescue, the men had tried contacting the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, but no one responded.

"It was about three or four miles [about five to 6.4 km] from my home, so I thought it wouldn't be much of a job to go over there and try and get him out," Valliere said, adding that if he and his friend hadn't helped the moose, it would have perished.

"He was buried right up to his head ... he was fighting, and fighting, and fighting just to keep his head out of the mud."
Maurice Valliere and his friend placed a strap around the moose's antlers and then pulled it out of the mud using an Argo. (Supplied by Bill Desloges)

Valliere said if the moose had been female, they likely would not have been able to help because the two men had to attach straps around the animal's antlers to be able to pull it out successfully.

"I was hoping to try to go around his stomach and try and get him out, but he was in too deep," he said. "There's no way I could have jumped in there, so the only option I had was to go around his horns."

They used the strength from an Argo ATV to pull the heavy animal out of the mud using the straps.

When the moose was finally pulled out of the mud, Valliere said, it was lying on its side trying to catch its breath, but then suddenly got up quickly and ran off.

"He scared me so I ran away, and he was stuck with one of the straps hanging there [attached to one set of antlers]."
Once freed from the mud, the moose ran off back into the bush, still covered in mud, and with a strap hanging from one of its antlers. (Supplied by Bill Desloges)

Valliere said the area where the moose got stuck is Crown land. He believes the hole was once a ditch along an old concession road, which had become covered in mud.

The two men don't consider what they did heroic or anything special.

"We didn't think it was that much of a big deal because everyone in Timmins would have probably went out and helped," Valliere said.

"We all love our our animals here."

Good on them guys. I wish the article said if they were hunters themselves or not (owning an argo)

Ministry didn't answer the phone lol imagine that... if I ever see them stranded somewhere I'll just not respond either.

MNR aren’t trained to rescue animals. It’s a health and safety issue ( not just for the moose).

Just seen this on the news. Great story except for the Ministry of No Response.

No challenging the statement, and kind of understand what You say Sam.

But-who to go to for help ,if not the MNR?
They could provide all the tool needed(Fire fighters,Police etc).

This reminds me of ,when a stray cat got stranded on the top of my neighbors roof, and was crying for help for few days.Big house, tall 2 storey building.I finally realized, that the cat is not there for just because, but actually can NOT move off the roof(scaffolding was there for few days, and was removed).
My neighbour was on vacation, and away for few more weeks.
    The cat needed rescue.

We went to the local animal care unit(not mentioning name to avoid complication)and my daughter of 12-14 went in,and asked for a help for the cat.
She was told-You need to go up on the roof, and rescue the cat!!!???
She came out in distress.Dad-i was told,i need to rescue the cat...........A kid!

So i went in,and told the person in charge(full grown adult)-this is not right! Are You not in business of helping animlas? And,do You not feel weird that you are asking a young kid to go on a roof ,to do Your job?
    And left.

We went on a trip, and came home late afternoon-and the cat was gone.How-i am never sure.
I still want to believe though, they came and rescued the cat.

Many of us retired MNR folks are disappointed to see the direction that the Ministry is going in. Less hands-on field work and more auditing. It’s like there’s a conscious effort to become redundant. Most of the changes (reduction of services) at MNR are aimed at saving costs. It doesn’t matter which party is in power, it’s the same game.

i doubt the ministry would have made it up there in time anyways unless they by fluke had a unit around there.

just a fraction of COs compared to years ago as others have said.

that looks like a crazy mud hole to get stuck in. would def swallow an atv up in no time.

at least that moose doesnt have to worry about ticks or black flies for a while... if it survived.
