    Default New beagle

    My new hunting buddy.
Found him through FB Ontario Hunting Beagles.
Pretty active community with a lot of hunting breeders with pups.

    Congrats, nice colors !
I just got a beagle as well. he is only 4 weeks old now, so will pick him up next month.
May I ask, what do you plan to hunt with him ? Im getting alot of disappointing advice on training him for waterfowl hunt.

Deer. I've had two beagles in the past that were great on deer.

I saw your thread on using a beagle for waterfowling....
You were getting enough negative responses that I didn't feel a need to pile on.
They are not really suited to it and unless you have a big beagle 30+ pounds, they'll have trouble with a mallard.
Also, while they don't mind swimming a creek if they are on something, they are not made for water retrieving, especially in cold weather.

All that said - if its the only dog you have, you can try to train it. Beagles can be trained to retrieve, its the size of the duck and water retrieves I would be concerned with. Even if it doesn't pan out, you can still have a lot of fun training it and even if it does it - sort of, but poorly, I think you'll still feel good about it. But just remember, its not a spaniel and it's not going to retrieve like one.

haha nice nice, cant wait to see more pictures of your little guy and his hunts in future.

Appreciate the feedback, Retrieving is not a huge deal, I always have a canoe or inflating boat with me, so as long as I can train him to be quite so I can just take him along eventually it would be perfect.

Oh ,I'm so jealous. Too old for a beagle now. My Dad and I bred and trained beagles for many years... wonderful years! Enjoy.
