    Default Abitibi Hardwater

Thinking about plans for the upcoming winter hardwater season. As per normal my go to will be Nipissing but also thinking about other options. One thing that keeps popping into my mind is a trip to Abitibi to chase eyes, pike and ling.

Have not been in that part of the province since the mid 90s so am unsure about access. Was thinking of driving to Cochrane (about 4 or 5 hour drive). and getting a hotel for one night and than riding the sled down the old CN rail line to the north shore of the lake. Once there would camp on the ice for 3 or 4 days and than sled back out. Time wise was thinking mid or later March to hopefully get some warmer weather.

Anyone have any relatively recent beta on the best way to access the lake in the winter?

Haven't been there myself, but a local guy I met goes there fairly regularly. I think he says that he parks in Quebec, just over the border, and then sleds in from there.

Never been there myself but I know some buddies from Timmins always go in from Matheson on the Hwy to Quebec.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Not tons to go on but that's okay - just makes it more fun. As for going in from the Quebec side this is an option but i was aiming to fish the western basin as the eastern basin gets a lot more pressure due to the ease of access from Quebec. If accessed from Quebec it means traversing the narrows between the basins to reach the western side. Probably a ton of current through there and not something i am willing to try on the ice without a lot more knowledge.
