Moose hunting just got expensive
We weren't counting on this with the new system. First off there are 3 of us and we hunt in a very remote area so we always got 2 or 3 tags
Before it cost us 3 X $58= $174 for 2-3 tags
Now it costs 3X ($15 + $35.29)= $151 plus $200 for a bull tag and $150 for a Cow tag
It now costs $500 for what cost $174 last year.
Ouch

Well, you are capping off the provincial coffer for those of us that are no longer monetarily participating.
Did you believe that MNRF would take a loss? Nope!

That was the part of the plan for the new system. There was to be a cost associated with receiving a tag.

A small game license is nearly 100 bucks. Definitely cheaper to go buy a cow from the butcher. Oh well…life is expensive.

For the hunters that get a tag every year it is more expensive, for the rest of us, its just less of a donation lol

Unless you live locally I bet the cost of fuel lodging and food addd up to more of an increase than that
But in your situation it doesn’t work in your favour. For the majority of the rest of us it does

A benefit of the new system is that the basic moose licence is cheaper. However for small groups with tags it is more expensive. The expensiveness will make groups think a bit longer on the number and types of tags that they absolutely need. I’m curious to know how many tags will go unclaimed and hope that information will be available.

You know that you 3 could all hunt on the one bull tag, that would run you $351 in total.
I look at it this way, an average bull at 800lbs live and cow at 500lbs live, that is 1300lbs, about 1/3 of that will be take home meat, about 430lbs. So that moose meat is costing you $1.16/lb, probably the cheapest meat you will ever get.
Think about turkeys now, almost $40 for a bird, you get a 20lb gobbler, that is about 10 lbs of meat? So you are running $4/lb for a turkey to go shoot one solo.
If you want a cheap hunt go get your migratory bird license at hunt geese every day for the entire season.

I think everyone will be surprised at the revenue drop to the government with the new system. Rarely will a crew take more than one tag @ $350 per Bull. With the low number of tags issued, tens of thousands of hunters will be entering the draw @ $15 instead of $48. Unless someone in their crew scoops a tag, those tens of thousands will be staying home. Rocket science it ain't.
