Exactly right. To say otherwise is like believing that because you are a guest who has been invited to a party you now own the house in which the party is being held.

Clarification: OOD owns the servers and s/w that is the backbone of the forum. However the content of the forum , it's heart and soul as it were, belongs to the membership. I believe that is why OOD has asked that the Moderators be volunteers taken from the membership to police the forum to enforce their rules and moderate the content.
Exactly so. Someone has to be the heavy; our lack of volunteers in the way of moderation is proof of how taxing the job can be. That being said, we've added an anonymous poll at the top of this thread to see if anonymous moderators is something people are interested in.
    What do you all think?

I think it's a heck of a good idea. We've had a few cases just recently that made one ponder if you're talking to the member or the Admin/MOD.

As Mods are also members it would be nice to differentiate when they are wearing the 'Mod Squad' hat or are just chilling with their homies..HaHa..

caveat: it would be nice to have the Mods go back to editing posts like they did back in the old days...be required to add the 'reason for editing' comment and/or a follow up PM. Members shouldn't have their posts deleted or edited and not know why.

I don't agree with having anonymous mods. The Mod knows the job- enforcing the rules of the forum....( I'm particularly against verbal abuse of a member by another member , which seems to be tolerated here. That discourages members from posting.)
The members should be able to contact a Mod when they need to and ask whatever questions they want.

PS If you don't mind me saying so, the problem on this forum is INCONSISTENT moderating. I'm a Mod on the Gundog Forum and we rarely have to enforce a rule. Due to consistency, the membership knows clearly what is acceptable and what isn't.

That could be part of the problem Sharon. Any long time member here who posts regularly has made friends of some and enemies of others in some way or another. Friends will be reluctant to moderate a friend's post, but might happily moderate the post of someone they've had an issue with in the past. Inconsistent.

Anonymous moderators would remove that hesitancy to remind a friend that they're breaking the rules, Helps keep things consistent.

I like the idea that someone could log in as a contributing member or log in as a mod when necessary.

Well said, however when you become a Mod losing friends is part of the package. Every Mod knows that.

And this idea will hopefully solve both those issues..

I don't believe editing is the way to go; it's a more complicated form of censorship. If we edit your post we're essentially plagiarizing your post, and I believe it would be hard to tell where to draw the line. Moreover it's not on us to "edit" you, what are these, prospective columns? The rules are posted and it's expected that they'll be followed. If we had more moderators, we could be more hard knocks about it all, though that would come with a separate set of complications.

I also don't believe there's a way to log in and have two personas without creating two accounts; everyone has a set scale of access.

Shouldn't be difficult for the volunteer to have permission to a create 'Mod 1' Mod 2' or 'Mod 3' accounts using a Mod Squad avatar. No need for e-mail capability communication can be done on the PM side.

CalTek and Sawbill and a few other Mods used to just remove the offending parts/words (name calling or the nonsense stuff). If they did, they would leave the reason for the editing. Leave the 'OK" part of the post intact. I don't remember anyone having a problem with that.

I've seen a lot more issues with posts just disappearing or being moved..as we saw recently with the now infamous 'Rabies Vaccine' thread. If there is no feedback from the Mod no lessons are learned.

Well, we can certainly readdress that, if we can recruit more moderators.
