On the heals of the numbers generated for the CERB and CRB..they now have an idea of what a UBI system that the NDP and Liberals are toying with would cost the taxpayers.

If anything, CERB and CRB were a perfect test case about why a UBI is an idea whose time has not come. Apart from the price tag of a universal income, which the Parliamentary Budget Officer pegged at $85 billion in 2021–22, rising to $93 billion in 2025–26, starting one now would hamper economic growth at the very time when that growth is sorely needed. UBI supporters may retort that employers should simply pay workers more, but without growth, it’s hard to see where those bigger paycheques will magically come from.

If one truly values “fairness,” one should think twice about a UBI. In a society as diverse from a geographic, economic and industrial standpoint as Canada’s, a one-size-fits all approach to income support is actually less equitable than giving help to those who truly need it. Something for progressives to think about, as the UBI debate unfolds.

I was kinda of leaning towards a UBI for seniors on CCP...A UBI income of $2K a month is a lot more than the $800 we get now HaHa.

Is this not close to $2K a month? Able bodied people should work and build up a retirement nest egg and not totally be dependant on government handouts. There are many jobs left unfilled at this time.

Did you read how some numpties who were drawing GIS, lost their part time job, then applied for CERB. They got a notice in the mail saying that because of the increased income ($2K a month under CERB) their GIS benefits will be withdrawn for 2021/2022....as they're linked to your income in the previous year.

In the concept stage, they haven't clarified what Social security benefits the UBI will replace. May be a fight on CCP because that we specifically paid into. Like any other pension, that usually can't be touched.

I have a fundamental problem in giving people money for doing nothing. What is next......schools not giving grades less than 60% to anyone?

Where is the drive or the desire to do something better, upgrade ones skills to get a better job to make more money or have a better quality of life? Scary that some people think that is the responsibility of the government to do this.

I am glad our forefathers did not have this mentality because we would still have gas lighting and driving a horse and carriage.

We shouldn't be mass filling with immigrants without building our healthcare system. If we are bringing in hundreds of thousands of people each year we should be making space for them as well.

Educated ppl go through the process and most times never even get approved. while the lower classes will find anyway to get here, boat or .... . but Educated ppl wont fill up the min wage jobs, the ones that cramp in a boat will.

maybe this whole thing is the start of a new era ... if all min. wage jobs replace with machines and robots, then the government will need a way to keep that population happy and alive ....
maybe the CERB was just a test run.
