For some reason I want to accurately shoot a 40Cal bullet out of a 50cal SML. Hopefully this can be achieved using duplex sabots. I’ve tried numerous times but couldn’t produce what I would call acceptable groups.
To start with I’ve shaved the 45-sabot’s skirt off to get it to sit deeper and flatter into the 50cal sabot.
This fit has the 45-sabot petals protruding above the 50cal sabot petals. Without going into a long-winded detail, I wonder if this is affecting the bullet release. The other area of possible concern is if there is any slippage between sabots. Taking these 2-points into consideration I addressed them as follows.
Possible Sabot Slippage
There is no glue available that would glue the sabots together. So, I opted for a 2-sided sandpaper disk that were glued together to fit between sabots. Hopefully this will prevent any possible sabot to sabot slippage.


Inner Sabot Petal Protrusion
Here I cut back the 45-sabot petals so they just align to the bottom of the 50-sabot petal chamfer. What I hope this will do is produce a 2-stage sabot release. Once the outer sabot breaks free then the centrifugal force from the rotational spin should push the 45-sabot petals outward causing it to break free. So, the theory goes, chuckle.


The 40cal bullet, 200SST also has a knurl to take it from .399” to .401” that provides the bore fit I need.

Sounds like an interesting experiment.... but more important.... WHERE DID YOU GET THE .45cal SST SABOTS? All I can find are the .50's or from the US and most places even there are out of stock too. Oh and the first time or two you try that, either a real light load or you might want to be with the firearm tied down, a string and yourself behind a tree. Shoot it someplace you can recover the sabots to see if they are doing anything that might incline you not to repeat. Depending on the plastic a tiny drop of plumbers glue MIGHT hold them together... or ruin them completely.

I don't know if this helps, but Cecil, at PR bullets, sells 40 cal bullet sabots of the .50.

There is no danger here as I’m using a Savage 10ML-II. I’m doing a preliminary run with 200FTX bullets to see where I can get my best groups. My loads are about 30K psi at the moment. Then will use said load to see how my duplex sabots perform.
Trying to recover sabots in a grass field is like finding a needle in a hay stack so I rely on my target results.
As for your quest for 45-sabot try Lawry.

You’ve sort of uncovered my backup plan, chuckle.
The only problem with 50-40 sabots they are too tight IMO and won’t allow the bullet to properly seat.
But if you expand the ID then you have a better fit.

I’m still working on refining this process with MMP sabot as a backup plan.
