Foodplot, no-till success
I just wanted to share some success I’ve had this year trying a No-till method for the first time.
I’ve been trying foodplots for the last 3 years with less than ideal growing success at the camp in the napanee area. I would do a standard spray and till with a set of disks and then cultipack. The lack of rain and some weed competition always seemed ruin things. Well this year breaking the tractor after discing a few smaller plots I was forced to try my hand at a no-till plot on 1 acre.
The premise being spray 2 or 3 times before planting buckwheat. Let the buckwheat grow 60-70 days, then broadcast foodplot seed and fert into the buckwheat and crush the whole field down with a cultipacker.
Fastforward to October and I’ve got the BEST plot I’ve ever had , while the other plots that I did with a tractor did OK at best ( major weed issues from seeds the discs disturbed). Moving forward all of the plots will be No-till and im planning on adding 2 acres.
